Troubleshooting Guide

Water looks cloudy

Why it happens: Low chlorine, high pH, poor circulation or early algae growth.

What to do:
- Test your water and make sure your chlorine level is healthy.
- Run your filter for a full day or two and backwash if needed.
- Brush and vacuum the pool.
- Add a clarifier to help clear up the fine particles.
- If it's still not clear, bring us a water sample - we'll help find the cause.

Green water or algae

Why it happens: Chlorine levels dropped too low or warm weather boosted growth.

What to do:
- Brush all surfaces
- "Shock" your pool with a strong dose of chlorine.
- Keep the filter running until the water clears.
- Use a non-foaming algaecide as a follow-up to prevent it returning.

Strong chlorine smell or red eyes

Why it happens: It's not "too much chlorine", it's chlorine mixed with contaminants. Called Chloramines.

What to do:
- Add a shock treatment to break down the chloramines.
- Keep the filter running and improve ventilation if it's an indoor pool.

White scale or rough surfaces

Why it happens: Too much calcium or pH is too high.

What to do:
- Use a scale remover or stain and scale control product.
- Keep your pH slightly lower for a while to help dissolve the build-up.

Corrosion or metal stains

Why it happens: The water is too "soft" or acidic (low pH or low calcium).

What to do:
- Use a metal remover or sequestrant product.
- Adjust your water balance with a hardness raiser and buffer to protect surfaces.

Foam on the surface

Why it happens: Sunscreen, body lotions or certain algaecides.

What to do:
- Skim the surface and shock the pool.
- Next time, use a non-foaming algaecide and encourage swimmers to rinse off first.

After heavy rain or lots of swimmers

Rain water dilutes chlorine and adds debris.

What to do:
- Scoop out debris, empty skimmer baskets and backwash the filter.
- Test your water, adjust the pH if needed and boost chlorine levels.

Chlorine not working properly

Why it happens: Too much stabiliser ( sunscreen for chlorine) can slow its effect.

What to do:
- The best fix it to partially drain and refill the pool with fresh water.
- Keep chlorine topped up until the level comes down.
